Best Sunset Spots in Malaga: 12 Viewpoints for Golden Hour

After years of chasing sunsets across Malaga, these are the spots we keep going back to.

The Malaga sunset is one of the best free experiences in the city. From castle viewpoints to rooftop bars and quiet beaches, there are sunset spots here for every kind of evening.

One of Heidi's and my favourite things to do in Malaga is to walk from our flat in the old town to one of these viewpoints. They are all easy to reach from the city centre, and most are completely free.

Our absolute favourite? The lookout at Gibralfaro Castle. Nothing else in Malaga comes close for panoramic sunset views.

Best Sunset Viewpoints in Malaga

1. Gibralfaro Castle Viewpoint

The Gibralfaro Viewpoint offers the best panoramic sunset views in Malaga. Perched at 130 metres on Mount Gibralfaro, you can see the entire city, port, cathedral, Alcazaba, and Mediterranean Sea laid out below. The sky shifts from deep purples to warm golden hues as the sun drops behind the mountains.

It is a short but steep hike up, so wear comfortable shoes. The viewpoint is free, and you don't need to pay for castle entry to access it. If you are exploring more of the city's elevated spots, we have a full guide to the best viewpoints in Malaga.

Arrive 20 to 30 minutes before sunset to grab a good spot. Bring a flashlight for the walk down after dark, especially in winter when it gets dark quickly.

2. Banos del Carmen and El Balneario

A historic old bathhouse turned scenic hangout, Banos del Carmen gives you an uninterrupted view of the sun setting behind the mountains of Torremolinos, with Malaga Bay in the foreground. It is a lesser-known spot, so you'll likely have a peaceful evening here with just the sound of seagulls and gentle waves.

There is an amazing restaurant here called El Balneario, which is excellent for a romantic sunset dinner. It is one of our picks for the best restaurants with a view in Malaga.

3. Muelle Uno and La Farola Lighthouse

If you love waterfront vibes, Muelle Uno is your go-to. The harbour reflects the golden sky, and you can stroll along the promenade to La Farola lighthouse at the end of the pier as the sun sets.

Try to arrive an hour early if you want a restaurant seat. Trocadero Casa de Botes is a chic beachfront option with Mediterranean views. Nusa has expertly crafted cocktails in a tropical setting. Salao serves exotic drinks with views right over the pier.

4. Parador de Gibralfaro Hotel

The Parador de Gibralfaro sits high above Malaga, giving you wide, open views of the city, harbour, and mountains. At sunset, the Alcazaba and bullring glow beneath you.

You can enjoy the view with a drink from the terrace bar, or a more slow-paced romantic dinner upstairs. The terrace is open to non-guests, so you don't need to be staying here. This is one of the best restaurants with a view in Malaga.

5. AC Marriott Hotel Rooftop

The AC Marriott rooftop isn't as high up as the Parador, but that might be a good thing if sweating isn't part of the plan. From the top, you get a 360-degree view of all of Malaga, from the harbour to Malaga Cathedral.

Book well in advance. Walk-ins are near impossible during sunset. This is one of the most popular rooftop bars in Malaga.

6. The Top at Hotel Molina Lario

The Top is a locals' favourite, with views of the harbour, inner city, and Malaga cathedral that are hard to beat.

On Fridays and Sundays, you can always find a live band. Come extra early because it fills up fast. It is another one of the rooftop bars in Malaga worth knowing about.

7. La Alcazaba

The ancient Moorish fortress offers a different perspective on sunset. From the terraces and gardens of the Alcazaba, you can watch the sun drop behind the city while the Roman Theatre and port glow below.

Entry costs around 3.50 euros. It is worth combining a late afternoon visit with sunset views from this 11th-century fortress. You can also visit for free on Sundays after 2pm, which we mention in our guide to free things to do in Malaga.

8. Malagueta Beach

For a relaxed beachside sunset, Malagueta Beach is the closest beach to the city centre. Grab a seat at one of the chiringuitos (beach bars), order some espetos (grilled sardines), and watch the colours change over the water.

It is casual, easy to reach, and quintessentially Malaga.

9. Pedregalejo Beach

A traditional fishing village with authentic chiringuitos, Pedregalejo offers a more local experience than Malagueta. The sunset here feels special because you are surrounded by families and locals rather than tourists.

Try Chiringuito El Cachalote for grilled fish and sunset views. You can read more about the area in our Malaga beach guide.

Best Sunrise and Sunset Hiking Spots Near Malaga

For the more adventurous, you can't beat a sunset from the mountains around Malaga. You'll need a car, bus tickets, or hiking shoes for these spots, but the views are worth every step.

10. Mount San Anton

A few kilometres from the city centre, Mount San Anton offers 360-degree vistas that are hard to match. You can see the entire coastline, the city below, and the mountains stretching inland.

Bring a flashlight for the walk down after dark, and wear proper shoes. This is a proper hike, not a stroll.

11. Montes de Malaga Natural Park

For the best mountain views, you'll need a car. The natural park has several mirador (viewpoint) spots where you can park and watch the sun sink behind the peaks. Pack a picnic and make an evening of it.

If you're renting a car, have a look at our guide to driving in Spain before you head out.

12. Botanical Garden of La Concepcion

One of Spain's largest tropical and subtropical gardens, La Concepcion offers a unique sunset setting among lush vegetation, streams, and waterfalls. From certain viewpoints, you can see the cathedral, castle, and sea.

Entry is free on Sunday afternoons. It is about 15 minutes by car from the city centre.

Sunset Cruises and Boat Tours

Watching the sun set from the water offers a completely different perspective on the city. Several companies run sunset cruises from Muelle Uno.

A catamaran sunset cruise usually includes drinks and often a DJ. Sailing cruises combine sunset views with a swim in the Mediterranean. Private boat hire is available if you want something more intimate.

Book through GetYourGuide or ask at the tourist office near the port.

Where Can You Watch the Sunrise in Malaga?

Sunrise in Malaga is a little trickier. Most bars and restaurants are closed, and the sunrise is easily blocked by the natural surroundings and the city. That doesn't mean there are no amazing sunrise spots. You just need to know where to look.

Pedregalejo Beach is quiet and local, perfect for watching the sun rise over the Mediterranean. Banos del Carmen works well too, because after sunrise you can head into El Balneario for breakfast. Gibralfaro Viewpoint is magical in the early morning light, and you'll have the whole place to yourself.

Any east-facing beach will work, but our favourite is near El Balneario because you can continue your morning with breakfast afterwards.

What Time Is Sunset in Malaga?

The sun sets at very different times depending on when you visit. There is up to a 3-hour difference between summer and winter.

SeasonSunset timeNotes
Summer (June)Around 9:30pmLongest days, best for late evening plans
Winter (December)Around 6:00pmShortest days, plan dinner reservations accordingly
Spring and Autumn7:00pm to 8:30pmPleasant temperatures for outdoor viewing

Check a reliable time tracker before heading out. If you're deciding when to come, our best time to visit Malaga guide covers weather, crowds, and events month by month.

Which Direction Does the Sun Set in Malaga?

Understanding where the sun rises and sets helps you choose the best spot.

The sun rises in the east, over the Mediterranean Sea. East-facing beaches and viewpoints are best for sunrise. The sun sets in the west, behind the mountains and hills. In winter, it sets more towards the bay with deep red hues. In summer, it sets further north with warm golden colours.

This is why Gibralfaro and the Parador are so good for sunset. You're looking west over the city towards the mountains, with the sea and port glowing below.

Tips for Watching the Sunset in Malaga

Arrive early. Popular spots like Gibralfaro and the AC Marriott fill up quickly. Get there 20 to 30 minutes before sunset.

Book rooftop bars in advance. Walk-ins are difficult, especially on weekends and in summer. Our rooftop bars guide has the full list with booking tips.

Bring comfortable shoes. Several of the best spots involve walking or hiking. A camera is a good idea too, because Malaga sunsets are seriously photogenic.

For elevated spots like Gibralfaro or Mount San Anton, a picnic adds to the experience. And always check the weather. Clear skies give the best sunsets, but partly cloudy evenings can create dramatic colours.

If you are planning the rest of your trip, our one day in Malaga itinerary works well alongside a sunset evening.
