Skip the rental car and explore Andalusia by train. Here's your complete guide to the best day trips from Málaga María Zambrano station.
These are the best day trips from Málaga by train, ranked by how rewarding they are versus travel time.
Córdoba takes just one hour by AVE. The Mezquita alone makes it essential. My personal favourite is the train to Ronda, one of Spain's most scenic rail routes.
Granada is 90 minutes by regional train, putting the Alhambra within easy reach. Seville is two hours by AVE. And local Cercanías trains reach the Costa del Sol beaches in 20-35 minutes.
You don't need a car for any of these. Málaga's train network opens up all of Andalusia by public transport.

How Málaga's Train System Works
Málaga María Zambrano is the main station for all long-distance and regional trains. It's connected to the city centre by metro, bus, and is walking distance from the port. This is where you'll catch AVE trains to Córdoba and Seville, Media Distancia trains to Granada and Ronda, and Cercanías local trains.
Málaga Centro Alameda is a smaller station right in the city centre, useful for Cercanías C1 trains to the coast if you're staying in the old town. If you're deciding where to base yourself, our where to stay in Málaga guide covers the best neighbourhoods.
| Train Type | Speed | Destinations | Booking |
|---|---|---|---|
| AVE (Alta Velocidad) | High-speed, up to 300km/h | Córdoba, Seville, Madrid | Book in advance at Renfe.com |
| Media Distancia (MD) | Regional express | Granada, Ronda, Antequera | Book at Renfe.com or buy at station |
| Cercanías C1/C2 | Local commuter | Fuengirola, Torremolinos, El Chorro | No booking needed, tap-in at station |
Download the Renfe Cercanías app to buy local train tickets on your phone. You can scan the QR code at the barriers instead of queueing for paper tickets.
Córdoba

Córdoba is the most impressive day trip from Málaga by train. The AVE takes just one hour, making it faster than driving.
The Mezquita-Catedral is the main attraction, a vast mosque with over 850 columns and a Renaissance cathedral built inside. It's unlike anything else in Europe. Arrive when it opens at 10am for the best experience. Free entry on Monday mornings (book online).
The Jewish Quarter (Judería) surrounds the Mezquita with narrow whitewashed streets and flower-filled patios. The Calahorra Tower across the Roman Bridge gives the best photos of the city. The Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos has beautiful gardens with fountains and Roman mosaics.
Multiple AVE trains run daily from María Zambrano. Journey time is 55 minutes to 1 hour. Tickets cost 25-45 euros each way, with the cheapest "Promo" fares available when you book 60 days in advance on Renfe.com. The last AVE back is around 9:30pm.
Seville

Seville works surprisingly well as a day trip, thanks to the AVE. Two hours gets you to Andalusia's capital, with its flamenco culture, tapas bars, and stunning architecture.
The Real Alcázar is a royal palace still used by the Spanish royal family, with Mudéjar architecture, intricate tilework, and peaceful gardens. Book tickets online. The queue can stretch over 2 hours in peak season. Seville Cathedral is the world's largest Gothic church, with Columbus's tomb. Climb the Giralda Tower for panoramic views.
Plaza de España is the most photogenic spot in the city. Cross the river to Triana for authentic tapas bars away from the tourist crowds.
Frequent AVE trains run throughout the day. Journey time is about 2 hours. Tickets cost 35-55 euros each way. The last train back is around 10pm. For a full itinerary, see our one day in Seville guide.
Granada

Granada is home to the Alhambra, Spain's most visited monument. The Media Distancia train takes around 90 minutes through beautiful mountain scenery.
The Alhambra and Generalife Gardens need no introduction. Book tickets at least 2-3 weeks in advance at alhambra-patronato.es. The Albaicín is the old Moorish quarter, with winding streets and the famous Mirador de San Nicolás viewpoint overlooking the Alhambra.
Granada has the best free tapas culture in Spain. Order a drink and you'll get a tapa automatically, no charge.
Several Media Distancia trains run daily. Journey time is 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes. Tickets cost 20-30 euros each way. Book afternoon Alhambra tickets (from 2pm) so you can take a morning train, explore the Albaicín first, then visit the Alhambra when the light is best for photos.
Can You Do a Day Trip from Málaga to Granada by Train?
Yes, and it works well if you plan ahead. The Media Distancia train takes around 90 minutes each way, giving you a solid 6-7 hours in Granada if you catch a morning train.
The key is booking Alhambra tickets in advance. They sell out weeks ahead, especially for the Nasrid Palaces. Book afternoon entry (from 2pm) so you can spend the morning in the Albaicín and eat lunch in the tapas bars around Plaza Nueva. The last train back to Málaga is usually around 8:30pm, which gives plenty of time even with a late Alhambra slot.
Ronda

The train to Ronda is one of Spain's most scenic rail journeys, winding through the Serranía de Ronda mountains. Sit on the left side for the best views.
The Puente Nuevo is Ronda's icon, an 18th-century bridge spanning the 120-metre El Tajo gorge. The Arab Baths are among the best-preserved in Spain. The Plaza de Toros is one of the country's oldest bullrings (now a museum). The old town has charming squares, white buildings, and excellent local wines.
There's typically only one direct train per day to Ronda (around 10am), taking about 2 hours. Tickets cost 15-20 euros each way. Check the Renfe timetable carefully and book in advance. If the timing doesn't work, consider an ALSA bus or an overnight stay.
Antequera

Antequera is often overlooked, but it's one of the easiest and most rewarding train day trips from Málaga. Just 40 minutes gets you to this historic town at the heart of Andalusia.
The Dolmens of Antequera are UNESCO World Heritage prehistoric burial chambers, older than Stonehenge. Entry is free. The Alcazaba fortress offers panoramic views. The historic centre has beautiful Renaissance churches and the famous Peña de los Enamorados visible in the distance.
El Torcal is a stunning limestone landscape just outside town, though you'll need a taxi or tour to reach it from the station.
Multiple trains run daily (some AVE, some MD). Journey time is 25-45 minutes depending on train type. Tickets cost 8-15 euros each way. Note that Antequera-Santa Ana station is outside town, so take a taxi or bus to the centre. Some AVE trains stop here, making Antequera a possible stop on the way to Córdoba or Granada. For a full itinerary, see our one day in Antequera guide.
Caminito del Rey (El Chorro)

The Caminito del Rey is a spectacular cliffside walkway pinned to the walls of the Desfiladero de los Gaitanes gorge. The Cercanías C2 train drops you at El Chorro station, just a short walk from the entrance.
The walk is 7.7km (including access paths) and takes 3-4 hours. The famous boardwalk section clings to cliff faces 100 metres above the river. It's safe but thrilling, and you'll need a head for heights.
Book walk tickets online weeks in advance at caminitodelrey.info as they sell out. The walk is one-way, starting at the north entrance. A shuttle bus (about 2.50 euros) takes you from the exit back to El Chorro station. Check shuttle times match your return train.
Several Cercanías C2 trains run daily. Journey time is 50 minutes. Tickets cost about 5 euros each way.
Fuengirola

Fuengirola is the easiest beach escape from Málaga. The C1 Cercanías train runs every 20 minutes, no booking needed.
The wide sandy beaches are the main draw, cleaner and less crowded than Málaga's city beaches. The Bioparc is an excellent zoo, especially for families. Sohail Castle overlooks the town and hosts summer concerts. The beachfront promenade runs all the way to Benalmádena if you fancy a longer walk.
The Teleférico Benalmádena (cable car) is one stop back on the train. Ride to the top of Monte Calamorro for panoramic coastal views. Easy to combine with Fuengirola by hopping off at Benalmádena on the way there or back.
Trains depart every 20 minutes from María Zambrano or Centro Alameda. Journey time is 35 minutes. Tickets cost about 3 euros each way.
Torremolinos

Torremolinos is the quickest train escape from Málaga. In 20 minutes you're on Playa del Bajondillo, one of the best beaches on the Costa del Sol.
The main beach has soft sand, calm water, and dozens of chiringuitos (beach bars) serving fresh seafood. The Carihuela district is the old fishing quarter, now filled with excellent seafood restaurants.
Beyond the beach, the Torre Pimentel is the 14th-century tower that gave the town its name. The Casa de los Navajas is a stunning 1925 Neo-Mudéjar palace near the beach, free to enter. The Parque de la Batería has old cannons, underground bunkers, and coastal views.
Walk along the coast from Torremolinos to Benalmádena marina, about 4km of seafront.
Trains depart every 20 minutes. Journey time is 20 minutes. Tickets cost about 2 euros each way.
How Do I Get from Málaga Airport to the Train Station?
Málaga Airport connects directly to María Zambrano station by Cercanías C1 train. The journey takes 12 minutes and costs €1.80. Trains run every 20-35 minutes from 6:44am to 12:54am.
If you land late or have heavy luggage, a taxi costs about €10-12 to the station. For a full breakdown of all your options, see our Málaga Airport to city centre guide.
Practical Tips

Buying tickets. Book AVE and Media Distancia at Renfe.com or Omio.com. Cercanías tickets don't need booking, just buy at the machine or use the Renfe Cercanías app.
Saving money. Book 60 days ahead for AVE "Promo" fares at half the walk-up price. The Renfe Tarjeta Joven gives 50% off if you're under 30. A Bonotren pass discounts Cercanías 10-journey tickets.
At the station. Arrive at María Zambrano at least 20 minutes before AVE departures. Validate Cercanías tickets by tapping in at the barriers. Avoid the 5-7pm rush on local trains.
Final Recommendation
Córdoba is the standout. One hour by AVE, and the Mezquita is genuinely one of the world's great buildings. For adventure, the Caminito del Rey via the C2 train is hard to beat. And for a lazy beach day, Fuengirola and Torremolinos are 20-35 minutes away with trains every 20 minutes.
